Continuing his exploration of texture and structure from previous seasons, Richard Nicoll showed a spring/summer 2012 collection inspired by sixties futurism at London Fashion Week. Lulu Kennedy’s Fashion East show is always one of the most exciting at London Fashion Week, and with three young designers whose aesthetics are poles apart the spring/summer 2012 collections were a visual delight. Marques’Almeida showed deconstructed denim fashioned into oversized t-shirts, while Maarten van der Horst’s collection had sorbet-coloured tailoring, giant tropical prints and unexpected ruffles. James Long’s snakeskin- and sparkle-infused designs will definitely find a place in the most glamourous of wardrobes. Watch the highlights from the show here.
Graphic prints, bold colour and traffic-stopping embellishment: all the Holly Fulton trademarks were present in a spring/summer 2012 collection inspired by ‘shell grottoes, casinos and early Versace’ at London Fashion Week. Simple shift dresses and boxy jackets were the perfect canvas for sunshiny scenes and zebra stripes, while the turquoise and yellow set a thoroughly summery tone. For spring/summer 2012, Nicole Farhi was inspired by ‘flowers, ice cream and lightness’ to create a collection of beautifully modern silhouettes accentuated by a rainbow of colour, washed-out prints and delicate appliqués. The sporty aesthetic was set off by sequinned net and technical fabrics, and enhanced with a pared-back beauty look with a super-bright lip the focus of the face. With the label’s 10 year anniversary to celebrate, Peter Jensen delivered a spring/summer 2012 collection which indulged a love of broderie anglaise and Lurex. A strong reference to sixties silhouettes permeated the show, and prints came in the form of seaside scenes, jungle animals and bold leopard. It was certainly a welcome return to London Fashion Week for the Danish designer. Watch the video highlights of the show here.
Even when Elizabeth Taylor resplendent as Cleopatra appears on the show invites, Topshop Unique’s designers proved you can never second-guess them with a bling-tastic spring/summer 2012 collection that referenced ancient Egypt and nineties hip-hop in the streetwear looks that the label excels at. Sheer panels, metallic prints on sweats and armorial embellishment were the order of the day. See the highlights from the London Fashion Week show here.
Never one to produce a trend-led collection, Marios Schwab’s spring/summer 2012 show at London Fashion Week was a directional take on classic silhouettes. Fitted, belted dresses came in latticed cut-outs or sheer black lined in nude or pastels to show off construction detail, while iridescent crystals and patent leather provided darkly glamourous accents. Unconditional’s edgy, draped aesthetic found a colourful new outlet for spring/summer 2012, with Phillip Stephens’ signature billowing silk dresses, tunics and blouses reinvented in hot pink and yellow alongside the more familiar monochrome and tertiary colours. This bold new look was not without a sense of humour either, with women’s and men’s knits proclaiming ‘Hello Sailor’ and ‘Sex Toy’ respectively. For spring/summer 2012, Matthew Williamson reminded us that few designers can pull off colour, print and embellishment quite like he does. How glad we are that the designer has decided to continue showing at London Fashion Week, for where else could one find all the colours of the rainbow, oversized damask prints and more sequins than a cruise ship cabaret so expertly and beautifully combined?
